The Denizen & The City of London Police Budget Again

Several years on and as we’ve said before we’re still waiting for the potential conflicts of interest involving planning permission being granted to Taylor Wimpey’s The Denizen development in Golden Lane – on the site that was formerly home to the Bernard Morgan House police accommodation – to be properly addressed by the City of London council. The issue has been reported in The Guardian, Daily Mail and elsewhere; it involved Chris Hayward, ‘Sir’ Michael Bear and James Thomson. Meanwhile the matter has just popped up yet again in the form of the blown City of London police budget. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to conclude that aside from their links to Taylor Wimpey, Hayward and Thomson should have perhaps also declared their role on the police committee as another potential conflict of interest before they voted in favour of giving planning permission to this constructor to build The Denizen on the site of Bernard Morgan House. The price paid for the site would have been untenable had Taylor Wimpey’s contentious planning application not scraped through.

Upkeep Costs May Cause Ghost Home Investors To Lose Their Shirts On Taylor Wimpey’s The Denizen Development

London’s skyline is in danger of being dominated by a forest of derelict residential towers (such as Taylor Wimpey’s under construction The Denizen) in 100 years’ time if apartment owners are unable to fund essential refurbishment work, a former leading planner warned this week. Peter Rees, previously chief planning officer for the City of London, said there was a danger funds set aside within apartment service charges for major renovation work on the new breed of private residential blocks would be insufficient to cover what was required. “If future refurbishment cycles cannot be funded by the apartment owners, their investments will become unsellable long before the expiry of their 125-year lease,” Rees said. “In 80, 90, 100 years’ time, I fear we’ll have the Thames lined with derelict towers.”

Another Denizen Howler From Taylor Wimpey

Those living around Golden Lane who opposed Taylor Wimpey’s demolition of 110 social housing units to build 99 investment flats for ghost home investors (with no on site social or affordable housing), weren’t too surprised by the latest billboards to go up around this developer’s Denizen site. These claim the sales office for The Denizen AKA The Turd is up the road in Golden ‘Street’ (sic) despite the fact it’s in Golden Lane where Taylor Wimpey’s luxury flats are being built on the corner with Fann Street. The hoarding is illustrative of how little the developer knows about the area or indeed cares about it. Just as Taylor Wimpey doesn’t care about the up to 70% loss of light those living in neighbouring council flats have seen disappear from their homes as a result of this building. Or the impact on the park and schools The Turd also overshadows.

The City of London Police Budget Deficit, Taylor Wimpey’s The Denizen & Top Cop Dave Clark

As we reported back in February this year concerns about potential conflicts of interest over planning permission being granted to Taylor Wimpey to build luxury apartments on the site of Bernard Morgan House now include speculation this former police building might have been sold to help cover a blown police budget. The focus of attention then was very much City of London common councillors James Thomson and Chris Hayward because of their involvements with both the planning and police committees. In a Sun ‘exclusive’ last week it was reported that top City of London cop Chief Superintendent Dave Clark was under investigation for ‘allegedly using secret information to help pals win crime contracts.’ If it turns out these allegations have any substance to them, we’d be very interested to know whether activities of the type being investigated contributed to the blown police budget.

No Matter What Taylor Wimpey Call ‘The Denizen’, It’s Still The Turd!

Taylor Wimpey’s PR lackeys at Cascade Communications sent out an email yesterday suggesting their paymaster was suffering from second thoughts about the name of their proposed Golden Lane development being The Denizen. Local people don’t want 99 luxury flats replacing 110 social housing units on the site, but rather than listening to us, the ‘community specialists’ hired by the developer are offering a vote on an absurd list of names for the building.

Chris Hayward, Mark Boleat, The Denizen & A Housing Market Rotting From The Top

Curious isn’t it that at least two City of London councillors responsible for poor planning decisions as regards housing in Cripplegate also happen to live in the suburban Three Rivers district that has recently been flagged up as suffering from spiralling homelessness. What’s more one of them, Chris Hayward, is actually a councillor in that part of Hertfordshire. The other, Mark Boleat, is chair of the Housing & Finance Institute – which lobbies on behalf of property developers, is backed financially by the Corporation of London, and punts what it calls ‘solutions’ to the so-called housing crisis that will only make matters worse.

The Denizen – A New Palace For The Dead!

As we’ve previously noted those pre-selling investors ghost homes in Taylor Wimpey’s planned development The Denizen AKA The Turd have hyped up the location with lies while saying nothing about the fact it will overlook the site of the old City of London mortuary in Golden Lane. What goes around comes around and so The Denizen at the south end of Golden Lane has been promoted as a place to park dead money; sadly these ghost homes will mostly be left empty rather than entombing the dead lives of those who invest in them.

The Denizen & The Plutocracy’s Programme For Growing Inequality

The City wants hot money looted by corrupt elites from outside the overdeveloped world to pour into London and other global centres, where it can be invested in property and thus hyper-inflate the housing market. As a result rents and mortgages get puffed up, and so do potential profits for financial capital as debt increases. As the last crash showed, the periodic failures of this system are often the means by which yet more wealth is transferred from the poor to the rich. The City and its offshoots such as The Housing & Finance Institute want London and many other urban centres blighted with ghost homes, since this forces up house prices and leads to ordinary people overspending on necessities and in debt.

Is it a burger bar? Is it a Wetherspoons? No, it’s The Denizen!

Children who don’t know The Denizen is a block of luxury flats tend to assume it’s some sort of fast food joint, and so when the hoardings first appeared it wasn’t unusual to hear kids saying things like: “Mummy can we go there to get a pizza?” The entrance interior looks remarkably similar to those of local J. D. Wetherspoon budget chain pubs such as the Masque Haunt on the corner of Old Street and Bunhill Row, or the Sir John Oldcastle on Farringdon Road. Once children understand the building is a block of supposedly luxury flats, it isn’t unusual to hear them cry: “But why would anyone live there? It’s so ugly!”

City Planning ‘Tsar’ Annie Hampson Gets An OBE, Those She Allegedly ‘Serves’ Get The Turd!

Annie Hampson, the City of London council’s chief planning officer and development director was the recipient of an OBE for ‘services to planning in London’ in the New Year’s Honours list. Presumably these services include helping the City foist Taylor Wimpey’s The Denizen AKA The Turd on local residents in Cripplegate, a development that will block sunlight from schools, homes and a local park; and which replaces 110 social housing units for key workers with a block of luxury flats that contains no social or affordable housing whatsoever. For this and other exercises in screwing over ordinary people in both the City and Islington – think of the Culture Mile too – we’ve no doubt the powers that be believe Hampson really deserves this ‘honour’.
