On The City Of London Historic Landmarks Consultation

More than a year ago we posted a blog entitled City of London ‘Consultations’ Are A Sham Designed To Rubber Stamp Decisions That Have Already Been Made. Our experience of City of London consultations has consistently been dispiriting and disappointing, something that will surprise no one who understands that this council is not just undemocratic but that it actively seeks to undermine democracy beyond its own local authority boundaries. Last week the City of London launched a consultation exercise on historic landmarks and the way it is framed and has been publicised indicates it will be as much of a sham as previous consultations.

COLPAI Construction Work, Lockdown & The Democratic Reform Of The City

The failure to suspend construction work on the City of London’s COLPAI project during the Covid 19 pandemic lockdown has generated enormous anger among residents of this local authority’s Golden Lane Estate. This is hardly surprising given these residents found themselves stuck at home a few metres from non-essential but ongoing noisy building work. Critical blogs on the subject by local councillors Sue Pearson and Graeme Harrower have been avidly read. Some of the comments beneath them are heart wrenching, such as one written by the father of a sick child undergoing treatment for cancer. This entire family must remain in isolation due to the high risk the pandemic poses to its youngest child. while the mega-rich City of London council turns a deaf ear on their plight.

Premier PR & City of London Artwashing

The idea that the City of London, the only place in the UK to maintain the utterly undemocratic business vote, wishes to ‘celebrate the positive impacts of… democracy’ is laughable. If this local authority wanted to celebrate democracy it would reform itself. Likewise, the City of London’s commitment to tolerance can be called into question on many counts, recently and quite notoriously because of the homophobic line of questioning a candidate for Lord Mayor was subjected to. The same goes for freedom. As for belief, there can be little doubt that the City believes in neo-liberal low regulation regimes that allow it and the network of tax havens it connects with to take wealth from those create it and divert it in the form of money to an undeserving corporate elite. None of this will prevent Premier PR from attempting to artwash the City of London as it promotes Believe! Faith, Freedom (and Football) and the culmination of Hannah Starkey’s deployment as Guildhall artist (AKA flunky) in residence, a series of portraits ‘celebrating City women’.

Tim Hailes, Edward Lord & The City Of London’s Twisting On Equality & Diversity

Taken out of the broader context of their City of London political activities and affiliations, the arguments Tim Hailes and Edward Lord make for equality appear very reasonable; closer examination shows they’re pushing an agenda of paying lip service to diversity and making concessions that are hard to avoid, while attempting to preserve a patriarchal status quo whose main interest is defending the privileges of a super-rich elite. Both appear incapable of pushing beyond their current agendas to a more inclusive vision of equality that is critical of male privilege and class privilege in all their forms – including men only masonry.

City Of London Residents Get A Choice Between Halloween Trick or Toxic Treat

Steve Bolton of Legal & General Investment Management who’ve just lent the city £125m describes the Culture Mile and related projects as ‘regeneration’ but we’ve heard that one before – what this really means is the marginalisation and social exclusion of anyone who isn’t rich. Here we reproduce Bolton’s Halloween trick or toxic treat message as reported in one branch of the corporate media.

More Fibs About Tax & The City of London

Anyone who looks at how the City of London operates will see that it financialises productive sectors of society so that it can suck wealth and life out of the world. Rather than giving anything to society, the City of London just takes and then uses some of the wealth it siphons off to lobby for neo-liberal under-regulated economic policies, so that it might further funnel the world’s resources away from those who need them for the benefit of a super-rich elite who already have way too much. If the City of London were to cease operations today, the UK economy and the world would be hugely improved. In an effort to obscure this fact the City keeps telling porky pies to make it look like it pays more tax than it does, then getting those it is in bed with to repeat these fibs.

City of London U-Turn On Aung San Suu Kyi

Portsoken councillor Munsur Ali, who tabled the original motion to revoke Suu Kyi’s award, told City A.M that the suspension decision represented a “watering down” of the Corporation’s original stance, but it was “better than nothing”. Another said it was an example of the Corporation going “weak at the knees whenever there is international pressure” and suggested other trading nations and the foreign office had criticised the decision to revoke. “It was a really unedifying spectacle of the Corporation retreating into its comfort zone and cosying up to power,” they added. Following the original vote to revoke the award, the corporation began the process of revoking the award. However, it is understood that during that process it decided to move towards suspension rather than revocation.

City of London Rolls Out The Red Carpet For Reactionaries As Liu Xiaoming & Mike Pence Are Feted At The Guildhall

Bank of England governor Mark Carney has pulled out of a dinner in the Square Mile designed to foster relations between London and China. The City of London Corporation is holding the event at The Guildhall on 3 September. It will be attended by China’s ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, the Corporation’s policy chief Catherine McGuinness and lord mayor Peter Estlin. Carney says he pulled out due to a diary clash rather than in support of pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong. The US vice president and notorious bigot Mike Pence will speak at a black tie dinner, hosted by the City of London Corporation, at The Guildhall on 5 September. The City of London Lie Machine pumps out propaganda claiming the Corporation supports LGBT rights but its actions speak louder than its words….

How The City of London Extracts Wealth From The UK’s Regions

“Nothing remotely illegal is being alleged… “(yet this) raises an important question: what is the purpose of this astonishingly complex corporate tower sitting atop a police training centre in Scotland? The shortest answer is that this is a classic example of the financialisation of apparently mundane parts of Britain’s economy…this is not an outlier: it is increasingly the way business is done. Overall, the general purpose of such complexity is for the owners higher up in the corporate tower to obtain maximum possible rewards from a particular arrangement, while shifting maximum risks onto others’ shoulders.”
